UK: Aeriel House, a luxury aparthotel overlooking Newcastle Quayside, has opened on the site of the former Tyne Tees TV studios.

The building, a former office block is on the site of the Tyne Tees TV transmitter and studios, which closed 14 years ago. It has been transformed in a £2.5 million regeneration project by Newcastle-based developer Lugano and is now operated by Dream Apartments.

The property has 28 one-, two- and three-bedroomed units. Dream Apartments has also partnered with Lugano on other Newcastle city centre aparthotel projects in the Bigg Market and one currently under construction in Gallowgate.

Lugano chairman Richard Robson said: “Like many of our regeneration projects, Aerial House was quite a sensitive conversion, given the prominence of the building on the iconic Quayside, but also because of some of the more technical issues we had to overcome. Lugano specialises in delivering complex projects and this was no different. The aim was always to upgrade this prominent landmark building, but to maintain its original integrity – and I think the project more than achieved that.”

A major task was dismantling and removing the 20-metre high transmitter and the addition of two additional floors to create penthouse apartments with views across the River Tyne, all overseen by contractors Meldrum Construction and designed by Newcastle based architects Norr.

Around 20 new jobs were created by the opening of the property, which has housekeeping and a 24-hour reception.

Robson added: “We have found a great partner in Dream Apartments, who now have aparthotels in three of the most vibrant corners of Newcastle – Gallowgate, the Bigg Market and the Quayside. It’s great to see this building brought back into operation and doing so well. I can only see it going from strength to strength.”

Dream Apartments is a sponsor of the 2019 Serviced Apartment Awards. The entry period is now open. Click herefor more information.
